Chapter 11

Anaki

“Do you have any idea what was that the Boezein did?” Kaina asked Nizon.

“I do. But I’ve never seen it actually done before,” the Arzidian answered. “It’s a skill passed through Artyrian ranks, though you do have to pass an initiation and live to be a certain number of years old to receive the secret.”

“Then how did Bavaius know the word and then what to do when the Boezein broke apart like that?” Kaina persisted. “And will my Boezein do that?”

Nizon shook his great hairy head. “I have no idea how he attained the knowledge. And no, your weapon will not do that. Only one Boezein that the Voice ever created is capable of doing what we just saw.” The head Artyrian sat silently, thinking of many different things all at once. “I wonder if he is perhaps an Artyrian and doesn’t know it. Such knowledge could conceivably have been passed from his parents before he was old enough to consciously remember the lesson or understand what it was for.” The Beast sighed softly. “It’s the only explanation I can come up with right now, no matter how unlikely,” he added more to himself than the people listening to him.

“An Artyrian?” Kaina repeated. Could it be? The forbidden attraction she’d carried for the man suddenly seemed like a sign from the Voice she had simply misunderstood. Bavaius had to be an Artyrian. There was no other way for him to have done what he’d done. And if he was an Artyrian, then it was possible, desirable even, that he was Kaina’s soulmate.

“If the captain’s an Artyrian,” a masculine voice from behind the Artyrians asked, “then why won’t the Boezein let him touch it?”

Both Kaina and Nizon looked back to find Damius sitting behind them, sipping a drink he’d gotten from somewhere, looking back and forth between them, waiting for an answer.

Private conversation has no meaning for this guy, Nizon thought, remembering the Hub and now looking into the eyes of a man who seemed not to understand that he had not been invited to join Kaina and himself while they spoke.

“Maybe no one is supposed to touch the Boezein except for Nerysta,” Kaina answered. “The Voice gave it to her to use, after all. Alithania handed it to her, not to Bavaius. The Coliseum still has rules, even though it seems to be stretching them to the breaking point tonight.”

“So you guys think he’s actually going to get out of this one alive?” the soldier asked, seemingly satisfied with Kaina’s guess and moving to the next topic.

“I do,” Kaina spoke up again. “I think he’s not only going to live through the Coliseum, but that he’s going to emerge more than he was when he went in.” Bavaius’ soulful green eyes floated before her in her mind’s eyes. Bavaius being her soulmate would validate all the feelings she’d been trying to repress when she was around the captain.
